Opening Up the Heart of the Home: A Kitchen and Living Space Transformation

When homeowners find a house with a beautiful backyard, they want to enjoy it from inside the home as well. In this renovation, the original layout didn’t take advantage of the property’s best feature. The kitchen felt disconnected from the backyard, and the surrounding rooms were divided by walls that limited both flow and functionality. Our goal was to completely reimagine the main living areas—creating a chef’s kitchen, opening up the floor plan, and designing spaces that work for both everyday family life and entertaining.

Reimagining the Kitchen Location
The first step was expanding the 90's kitchen into the adjacent dining room. This move allowed us to position the kitchen where it could truly connect with the backyard views that drew the homeowners to the property in the first place. New windows were added to frame the landscape and bring natural light into the space as well as a larger sliding door to create and indoor outdoor experience. The result is a kitchen that feels bright, open, and visually connected to the outdoors. For a homeowner who loves to cook, functionality was key. The new layout was designed to function as a true chef’s kitchen—with improved workflow, more usable prep space, and thoughtfully integrated storage.
Opening the Floor Plan for Family Living
The homeowners also had young children and wanted to stay connected to the rest of the home while cooking or entertaining. To accomplish this, several interior walls were removed to open the kitchen to both the living room and a secondary family room that would become the home’s primary gathering space.
However, these walls were supporting the second floor of the home. Structural steel beams were required to carry the load once the walls were removed. Rather than leaving the beams exposed in a purely structural form, we wrapped them in white oak to seamlessly integrate them into the overall design.
This solution allowed us to maintain the structural integrity of the home while adding a warm architectural element that enhances the space.
Creating Purposeful Secondary Spaces
Beyond the kitchen itself, we designed several supporting areas that improve how the home functions day-to-day.
Near the dining area, we incorporated a wet bar that doubles as a dedicated coffee station. This provides a convenient spot for morning routines and entertaining without interrupting activity in the main kitchen.
In the living room, we designed a custom built-in unit that adds both storage and architectural interest. Hidden within the millwork is a discreet door that leads directly to the garage—an unexpected feature that keeps the space looking clean and cohesive while maintaining practical access.

A Fresh Design Direction

Because the home was originally built in the 1990s without a strong architectural style, the renovation offered a blank canvas for design. This allowed us to introduce a more cohesive and intentional aesthetic throughout the main living spaces. The homeowners were drawn to natural wood tones paired with white cabinetry. We leaned into that palette by incorporating warm wood elements, including the white oak beam wraps and other subtle details that balance the brightness of the cabinetry. The result is a space that feels timeless, warm, and tailored to the way this family lives.

Designing for the Way They Live

By relocating the kitchen, opening the floor plan, and introducing thoughtful built-ins and functional zones, the home now supports both everyday family life and entertaining. Most importantly, the kitchen finally captures the beautiful backyard views that made the homeowners fall in love with the property in the first place.

This renovation transformed a compartmentalized 90s layout into a bright, connected, and highly functional living space—proving that thoughtful design can completely change how a home feels and functions.
