Not All ADUs Are Created Equal

See How We Designed a 1200 SF ADU Dream Kitchen

When it comes to Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs), size makes a big difference—especially in the kitchen! ADUs can range anywhere from 300 to 1200 square feet, and the kitchen layout often reflects that variation. For a recent 1200 SF ADU project in Napa, we designed a kitchen that not only maximized space but also delivered the functionality and aesthetic our clients dreamed of.

A Compact, Yet Spacious Design
In this ADU, we placed the kitchen at the heart of the home, seamlessly connected to the central living area. Even with a compact footprint, we managed to incorporate a center island that doubles as a dining area—perfect for casual meals, entertaining, or simply enjoying a morning coffee.
The island serves as both a functional prep space and a cozy gathering spot. The waterfall edge detail adds a touch of luxury while maintaining a streamlined look that doesn’t overwhelm the space.
Thoughtful Appliance Choices for a Smaller Footprint
Since ADUs often require smaller appliances to save space, we selected sleek, high-performance appliances that fit beautifully into the layout without sacrificing functionality. Stainless steel finishes give the kitchen a modern feel while reflecting natural light from the adjacent windows, helping the space feel bright and airy.
Creating an Open and Airy Feel
To enhance the sense of space, we chose not to install upper cabinets. This decision keeps the kitchen feeling spacious and open, allowing natural light to bounce around the room and making it more inviting. We optimized storage in the lower cabinets and the newly designed nook to ensure ample space for all kitchen essentials.

Design Details That Make It a Dream Kitchen

  • Warm Wood Elements: A stunning wood-paneled ceiling adds warmth and texture, balancing the crisp white cabinetry and subway tile backsplash. The natural tones create a cozy, inviting ambiance.
  • Pendant Lighting: We chose minimalist glass pendant lights above the island, adding a soft glow and enhancing the open feel of the space.
  • Custom Cabinetry for Maximum Storage: With a focus on functionality, the cabinets were custom-designed to provide ample storage without compromising style.

A Kitchen That Feels Bigger Than It Is

Despite the smaller square footage of an ADU, this kitchen doesn’t feel confined. Thoughtful space planning, a cohesive color palette, and efficient design choices make this kitchen feel expansive and ready for daily living.

If you're considering building an ADU or remodeling a small space, remember that size doesn’t have to limit your design dreams. With the right expertise and thoughtful planning, you can create a space that feels just as luxurious and functional as a full-sized home.
