From Milkbarn to Modern Farmhouse
A Panoramic Dream in Penngrove
What started as a humble milking barn on a historic dairy farm has been reimagined into a two-story modern farmhouse with sweeping views of Santa Rosa—and we were honored to help bring this vision to life. This wasn’t just a rebuild—it was a transformation. And what set our process apart was our commitment to helping the clients visualize before committing. Through our detailed design process, which includes 3D renderings and material selections, the homeowners felt confident every step of the way. From the barn-inspired rooflines to the curated finishes, every detail was chosen to strike a balance between rustic roots and modern comfort.
The original structure on this Penngrove property was a former milking barn—later turned into a residence. While the property itself held rich history, the building lacked character and, more importantly, structural support. With unreinforced cinderblock walls, it wasn’t safe to keep. Our clients loved the rural charm of the location and wanted their new home to reflect that same farmhouse feel—but with modern function and style. We helped them design a new two-story home that honored the property’s roots while giving them a space built to last.
Using the same first-floor footprint, we designed an all-new home with a second story and an open, light-filled layout. By moving two bedrooms upstairs, we were able to open up the main level dramatically—creating a central hallway that leads into a show-stopping kitchen, dining, and living space. A full wall of glass now frames the sweeping views of Penngrove and fills the home with natural light.
That’s where JLM Designs truly shines. Unlike most architects or draftsmen who focus on only one piece of the puzzle, we bring both technical precision and a designer’s eye. Design isn’t just about how a home looks—it’s about how it feels to live in.
We think through the little things that make a big difference: how a floor plan encourages connection, how ceiling height adds breathing room, and how natural light moves through your day. And yes—every finish should be beautiful, but also built to last. A well-designed home works as beautifully as it looks.
Our clients were especially grateful for our 3D renderings, which allowed them to visualize how the new layout would flow in real life. It was during one of those reviews that they made the final decision to go with a two-story layout—confident they could now see how it all came together.
We design with intention—planning for how people move, connect, and feel in each space. From cabinetry to tile to the line of sight from the entryway, every detail is chosen with both form and function in mind.
